Our first day at nursery!

I have been looking forward to this day for a long time! The boys are soooo ready for nursery and I am even more ready for a little rest!

They qualified for their free 15 hours a week this week and I have taken advantage of them. I love having them at home, but I’m really looking forward to being able to let nursery occupy them for the morning while I organise afternoon activities.

I didn’t think the first morning would go particularly smoothly, they have been saying all week “I don’t like nursery” – but unless it’s Thomas The Tank Engine or covered in chocolate this is their default opinion on everything at the moment.

Instead of the blissful smiling photos I see all of my friends posting of their little treasures with their backpacks ready to go, these were the best I could get:

They flat refused to wear their new backpacks and began screaming their socks off at home. Oscar however was convinced it was raining at nursery and insisted on taking the umbrella (I didn’t argue).

Upon arrival they announced themselves in a chorus of screams while hanging from my legs. It was quite awful, I had to prise them from my legs and lever them into their room, it was like trying to get a cat into a cat box (x 3!) I left them in the care of their key workers while I snuck away (as advised by good friends) feeling rather guilty.

About 10 minutes later I had a phone call from the lovely manager to say that they were now happily playing with dinosaurs. That’s the great thing about pre-schoolers, they’re fickle creatures! I, on the other hand, was still feeling slightly traumatised so I went home and ate the remains of the Christmas chocolate stash.

As I crept in to pick them up (probably a few pounds heavier with the odd chocolate smudge on my face), they were all sat quietly reading a book with the other children (they never did this when I took them to playgroup!) I was told they didn’t have any other “wobbly” moments and they have been “very good and very polite” – it’s nice to know they are breaking the staff in gently!

I loved having a few hours to myself, but I think I went a bit mad trying to get things done. I cooked 4 spag bol dinners in the slow cooker ready to freeze, I made lunch for when they got back, paid the car tax and replied to overdue emails! It’s amazing how much quicker it is to do things without three little boys constantly fighting for your attention. The afternoon was much more relaxed than usual, we had hours of playing with trains, shops and cars and I didn’t have to rush off to get that thing done that needed doing!

Once I have caught up with three years worth of boring house stuff that has accumulated, I would love to think that I will come up with some amazing entrepreneurial idea that will allow me to work from the comfort of my sofa, but I’m still waiting for my little lightbulb.

In the meantime, I have never-ending house stuff to do and shit loads of HOT tea to drink!

  1. Hot tea? Absolute bliss!
Having worked in the preschool sector I completely agree that they are indeed fickle little things. I always felt so sorry for the mums who left in tears as their children howled. Only for the kids to instantly forget they were upset when they realised no one was playing with their favourite toy! 🙂
